LGPN VII Egypt

This final phase of LGPN collects the data from or related to Egypt. As the amount of material is extensive it is being compiled in two stages. The first part has concentrated on the Delta and Fayum. It has been carried out in collaboration with the online Trismegistos database. The onomastic material is now complete up to the beginning of the Roman Period (30 BCE). For Roman Egypt data collection is ongoing.

The second stage will compile names from Upper Egypt, the Eastern and Western Deserts and from texts of unknown provenance. The time span of the sources covers the period from the earliest Greek names attested in Egypt – the 7 th century BCE – up to the end of the 3 rd century CE, the beginning of Late Antiquity.

The database includes (a) all personal names written in the Greek script; (b) Greek names (i.e. names of Greek origin) written in non-Greek scripts, which means principally in demotic and hieroglyphs; and (c) the identification of all named individuals.

To start a search

Enter the search field in Unicode as Ἀλεξάνδρα or in its unaccented form Αλεξανδρα. Case and accents are ignored.

Wildcard searches for missing characters

It is possible to find entries matching a pattern using ? and * wildcards for missing characters.

? is the single wildcard or joker, replacing exactly one character

* is the multiple wildcard or joker, replacing any number of characters

So a search for Δ?μο* will produce names beginning Δαμο- and Δημο-. A string Δ*μο* will give the same results, but also any other names which begin with Δ- and also contain -μο-, such as Διδυμος and Δοκιμος. Search for *νδρα will return all names ending with νδρα, e.g. ῾Αγεισάνδρα or Κασσάνδρα.
